Communicate
I put my hands on my hips and stood there until the pitcher gets into his stance. As the pitcher starts his motion, the runner on first takes off toward second. The pitch is high in the strike zone but the batter swings and misses the ball completely. The catcher throws the ball to second as the short stop catches the ball and tags the runner out with room to spare. Oy.
My hands on my hips was the sign for a hit and run. My hands stayed on my hips out of frustration of a poorly performed skill that was practiced over and over again. But this is not the time to give the players feedback. You can't stop the game and talk about what went right and what went wrong. That is meant for the next day's practice.
This analogy is similar to teaching. I'll give students a "quiz" - a formative assessment - one day, grade it, write feedback on it, and give it back the next class, and then set up the class for more practice or an activity that helps guide them to the next level.
I really like put the targets right on the assessments (see Differentiate page). That way students can see specifically what they were able to do and what they need to work towards. I've also liked our new reporting system, Jumprope. I've used it for about a year now and I really like how it organizes targets and standards while giving you options on ways to calculate the grades and reporting it. Being on the paid version, I can also report habits of learning without those grades being counted towards the academic grades.
